Most say that the paleo diet is modeled on prehistoric human diets, but the time has come to add some modern spice to it!
And what’s more modern than a Meal Replacement Shake in recent history?
These have been flying off the shelves ever since they were introduced as something that can replace an entire meal.
If you’re way too busy to prep a healthy meal for your paleo diet and your paleo meal prep ideas seem to feel repetitive, why not add meal shakes into the mix?
Oh yes, it seems like you’ve had this idea in your mind for a while, and that’s probably the reason you’re looking for a paleo meal replacement shake. Am I Right?
If so, you’re in safe hands! Finding a Paleo Meal Replacement Shake is not as easy as finding a regular shake. The reason being that the vast majority of Meal Shakes are NOT paleo. I’ll discuss more about this down the line.
After thorough hours of research and real-life tests by editors, we’ve picked some of the best paleo meal replacement shakes out there on the market. So fingers crossed! Also, all of them are selected based upon their health benefits, ingredients, pricing, and of course, taste.

7 of the Best Paleo Meal Replacement Shakes
Before we get started, you might be concerned whether or not Meal Shakes are safe for a paleo diet. If so, I have to say that there is no problem in adding Meal Replacement Shakes as a part of your paleo diet.
However, not all meal replacement shakes are paleo. If you add protein powder and meal replacements that include whey protein, pea protein, and soy protein into the mix, they’re not technically paleo-approved. Mainly because dairy or legumes are present in them.
But it’s important to note that not everyone restricts every form of dairy when on paleo due to the protein they provide.
Anyways, shall we take a look at the products?
The first and the best one on this list of the best paleo meal shakes is Ample. If you want a complete paleo meal replacement experience, I bet this can deliver because it checks all the important factors of a paleo diet.
It’s low carb and high protein, plus, most importantly, its all-natural ingredients. No artificial thingamajigs, because as you may know:
“The paleo diet is all about natural, unprocessed foods.”
In this shake, aside from carbs and proteins, probiotics, prebiotics, electrolytes, antioxidants, and healthy fats are all present. And if I’m being honest, you might have a hard time preparing a meal that has all these in it.
Next is the protein present in the Ample Meal Shake all combine and provide all nine essential amino acids the body doesn’t produce by itself.
Since there are pre-and probiotics, you can even expect these shakes to aid with digestion and lean muscle building exceptionally. Worth mentioning is that the Ample shake is excellent in keeping you full.
We found that it constantly provides at least three-plus hours of satiety in our testing. This is probably because of the 20 superfoods available in the meal replacement shake.
The taste was spot on in this shake, and out of the bunch, it was probably the best tasting one by a considerable margin.
However, there are two downsides: The first one is that Ample contains grass-fed whey protein in it. This means it is not for individuals who restrict every form of dairy from their paleo diet.
The next downside is, Ample has only three flavor options, vanilla, chocolate, and berry. We tried berry and chocolate flavor, and as I already said, they tasted great.
And finally, if your goal is to lose weight, Ample can help with that too. With the inclusion of 25 grams of protein and 400 calories, the shake can for sure help you manage calorie deficit leading to healthy weight loss.
2. Garden of Life Raw Organic Meal
Next up is the Meal Replacement Shake I personally use. This is another fantastic paleo-friendly option and is almost similar to Ample shakes.
This protein supplement is full of natural ingredients and is USDA certified, too. Plus, it’s entirely plant-based and made up of plant protein.
Probiotics for improved gut health and immunity, along with antioxidants and digestive enzymes, are present in this shake as well. Both of them are vital for health in different ways.
With the inclusion of 44 superfoods, expect to be filled for at least three hours without any problems. Also, you don’t need to worry about any nutrient loss since the shake is made from raw, uncooked ingredients.
Similar to Ample, Garden of Life Raw Organic Meal too has three flavors Vanilla, Vanilla Chai, and Chocolate. And when it comes to taste, there’s no compromise; it’s perfectly drinkable.
Earlier I mentioned that this shake is made from plant-based protein, and this means pea protein. Another type of protein paleo dieters tends to look away.
This is a case that’s somewhat similar to Ample, and if you’re someone who’s okay with legumes on paleo, there’s no problem in giving Garden of Life.
3. Fit 365 Gourmet Shake
Fit 365 paleo protein powders give Ample and Garden of Life a run for their money!
Delicious, healthy, and most importantly paleo-friendly, This can fit into your paleo-lifestyle seamlessly. Worth noting is that the shake is keto-friendly too.
It’s, as usual, made up of all-natural and organic ingredients. So there are no artificial sweeteners, ingredients, or flavors.
Plus, the whole meal replacement is soy, gluten, and GMO-free.
Along with that, the Fit 365 contains probiotics, digestive enzymes, MCTs, and plant-based fibers. All these means improved weight management and weight loss, enhanced lean muscle and energy, improved health and mental clarity.
Business as usual when it comes to the flavors department too. The Fit 365 shakes have three natural flavors: gourmet chocolate, vanilla bean, caramel coffee fitaccino.
In our testing, it tasted fine but at the expense of a bit of a chalky texture. The plant-based fiber blend in the shake served great as it kept us full for more than two-plus hours consistently.
4. Rootz Paleo Protein Superfood
The protein superfood is primarily made with paleo in mind.
This can be clearly seen in their all-natural ingredients; hemp protein, egg white protein, and sacha inchi are some of the primary providers of all the nutrients.
Even Though the name suggests protein, there’s much more than that. It contains seeds, greens, berries, and vegetables such as spinach, broccoli, and kale. So you’ll not only be getting a boost in protein but also some top-up to general health.
Green detox blend and electrolytes are all present in here too. These two can significantly aid in extra benefits such as regulating and controlling the balance of fluids in the body, boosting energy levels, and assisting with digestion.
However, apart from all those benefits comes in the drawbacks. The flavor options and taste first, there is just one flavor in the Rootz Paleo Protein Powder, and that is their unique chocolate banana nut flavor. Second, the actual taste of it is a 6 out of 10 for me.
However, some of the individuals in our team loved it. But the ‘organic and raw’ taste, I’m not a fan of it, to say the least.
5. Primal Kitchen Primal Fuel
For many, this is one of the best tasting and paleo-friendly mixes in the market. Also, Primal Kitchen is one of the biggest ‘PALEO’ brands in the market that continues to gain prominence.
This meal replacement shakes fits the paleo diet perfectly; it has just a handful of ingredients because, you know, the meals in paleo are somewhat minimalist. It has coconut milk, inulin, and cocoa powder, along with some other healthy ingredients.
However, the primary protein source in the shake comes from whey. But this is not the whey protein that you’re typically used to seeing. This is a kind of whey that is allowed in paleo mainly due to all the lactose that should be present are removed.
This is good news if you’re sensitive to dairy.
Anyways, the shake is low in carbs, and since coconut milk is present in this paleo meal replacement shake, the amount of healthy fats available is stellar.
When it comes to benefits, Primal Fuel is excellent in keeping insulin levels low. Not only that, the inulin present in the shake has some vital advantages, such as improving digestion and aiding weight loss.
Finally, a little word on the flavor and taste. First, the Primal Fuel shake has a chocolate and vanilla coconut flavor for the flavors. We bought the vanilla coconut flavor since it was something new, and taste-wise, it was something new too.
I guess the coconut plays a significant role as it seems like it’s adding a smooth sweetness that makes the vanilla taste a little bit better. However, worth noting is that the shake lacks a little sweetness.
6. JJ Virgin’s Paleo-Inspired All-In-One Meal Replacement Shake
As the name suggests, these shakes take a lot of inspiration from a paleo dieter’s perspective.
Firstly the amount of protein, this thing packs 21 grams of high-quality paleo protein. The second is that the JJ Virgin’s shake is fully loaded with five fruits and vegetables.
Apart from all these, this shake contains bone broth protein, which is a type of protein that’s derived from beef, and it’s 97% purely hydrolyzed.
This type of protein has a staggering amount of BCAAs (branched-chain amino acids) and collagen-specific amino acids.
The BCAAs are excellent for rebuilding and repairing muscles, while the collagen-specific amino acids improve skin health along with other benefits to health.
That said, this shake, similar to others on the list, suffers from just two flavors, and those are the two traditional chocolate and vanilla. Taste-wise, there’s nothing significant. If you think that the bone broth produces a meaty flavor, forget it, there’s nothing like that.
7. Pure Paleomeal Bone Broth Protein Meal Supplement
Coming in at seventh is the Pure Paleomeal. This meal replacement, similar to JJ Virgin’s, is made from bone broth.
Along with the benefits of bone broth, the shake is also high protein. Not only is there a good amount of protein, but also other nutrients such as healthy fats, vitamins, and minerals.
The available vitamins and minerals include magnesium, B12, and zinc.
Pure Paleomeal also has a very low glycemic impact in their meal replacement shakes.
One of the main ingredients present here is the bone broth (Hydrobeef). This thing goes through a process known as ultra-filtration and hydrolysis. With these procedures, the protein turns into highly concentrated peptides and makes it very easy for the body to absorb.
Vanilla and chocolate are two of the available flavors in the Pure Paleomeal. We tried vanilla, and it actually tasted great.
What Is a Paleo Diet?
Here’s a little info on what the paleo diet actually is. This is a type of dietary plan that emerged based on foods that were consumed during the Paleolithic era. This era dates from 2.5 million to 10,000 years ago. (1)
The diet often includes foods that can be acquired by hunting and gathering. These include vegetables, fruits, lean meat, fish, seeds, and nuts.
There are some foods that a paleo diet limits. These are foods that cropped up through farming 10000 years ago, such as grains, dairy products, and legumes.
Basically, a paleo diet is all about following an ancient way of eating. Also, this diet has some other names such as paleolithic diet, caveman diet, hunter-gatherer diet, and stone-age diet.
Things to Look Out For When Buying a Paleo Meal Replacement
Purchasing perfect paleo meal replacement shakes is no easy feat. A considerable amount of things should be taken into consideration if you want something healthy. So, here are some essential things that should not be overlooked when purchasing paleo meal replacement shakes.
A paleo diet is a high protein diet, so a shake without the necessary amount of protein won’t just cut it. This diet requires you to get at least 15-20 grams of protein per meal. Try to go for meal shakes or protein powders with the amount as mentioned above. And yes, It’s fine even if it’s higher, but it shouldn’t be lower.
Meal shakes should be convenient; if it isn’t, there’s no point. Get a shake that’s quick and easy to make. For example, the shakes should have no recipes that need attention. Thankfully, the shakes on our list are all pretty much instant; just pour and serve.
These days, a lot of meal replacements contain different types of artificial content and the most important one being the artificial sweeteners. These probably tend to do more harm than good, so stay away from paleo protein, and meal shakes that include this. (2)
Worth mentioning that none of the shakes in this list contain any type of artificial content.
You can also consider the following Meal replacement shakes without artificial sweeteners or stevia.
